This research is motivated by a shift in the meaning of the symbol of the crow in QS. al-Ma'idah verse 31. In the Qur'anic texts, the crow functions as a divine educational medium that teaches the funeral procedure to Qabil, while in popular culture the crow is often interpreted as a symbol of death, bad luck, a mystical world, and a bad omen. These differences show the construction of meaning influenced by cultural myths so that it has the potential to shift people's understanding of the moral message contained in the verse. This study aims to analyze the meaning of crow symbols in QS. al-Ma'idah verse 31 uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to distinguish textual meaning from meaning shaped by social construction. The research uses the library research method with a qualitative approach. Data was obtained from the Qur'an, classical commentary books, books, and relevant scientific articles, then analyzed through the linguistic analysis method with Roland Barthes' semiotic model which focuses on two levels of meaning, namely denotation and connotation (myth). The results of the study show that denotatively the crow is a creature sent by Allah to give an example to Qabil regarding respect for the corpse through the practice of burial. At the connotative level, the crow represents educational, ethical, and divine guidance values that affirm respect for human dignity. On the contrary, the notion of the crow as a symbol of bad luck, death, and the mystical world is the result of the construction of cultural myths that have no basis in the Qur'an or authoritative interpretation. Thus, Roland Barthes' semiotic approach is able to uncover the difference between the meaning of revelation and the meaning formed by culture and provide a more objective foundation in understanding religious symbols in the study of contemporary interpretation.
